- FETAL DOSE EFFECTS, Cont’d
- When the primary beam irradiates the fetus directly, rather high exposures can result. The dose to the fetus is about 30% of the skin entrance dose. For example, for a 20 min. study at 7 R/min to the skin, the fetus will get about 42 Rads. A dose this high would be cause for concern and a trip to the genetic counselor for possible action. Doses below 25 Rads rarely need intervention, as a “normal” child will most probably result. The only concern under 25 Rads is a low, albeit some, statistical increased risk of childhood leukemia.
